Here is the opening ten minutes of Disturbia, i was looking at the opening scene in particular to see if it includes all the codes and conventions.
In this opening scene, it introduces the main character Kale and his father sharing some quality time together, fishing. You can see the location, a river with mountains behind. We are not told anythng about the narrative or the plot, we also can't tell what the genre or themes are. There is no details of cast and crew. The films title is shown. Even though we see the location there is no information as to where that is. There is also can't tell the mood or tone until later in the scene. There is no signature theme tune.
I can't find a clip for Sweeny Todd. The opening scene of Sweeny Todd includes, characters, location, genre, themes, details of cast and crew, the films title, indication to historical period, mood and tone. The opeing scene doesn't tell us the narrative/plot, an indication of place or the theme tune.
I am going to compare two openings of two different movies form different times. The opening scenes I will be comparing are The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Kill Bill (2008).
The opening scene to both these films are very different as in The Incredible Hulk, the story starts when Bruce Banner is infected with the radiation that turns him into the hulk. Whearas, Kill Bill is very strange, i have never seen Kill Bill and so found this opening scene shocking and jumpy. The Incredible Hulk, is a movie i have seen a couple of times and understand the story. From seeing the opening scene to Kill Bill, it seems like Uma Thurman's character is in trouble and has been beaten up by someone. The shot at the end makes me think the movie may have started at the end and will show how the characters got into the situation they are in. The Incredible Hulk looks very modern with all the special effects and camera shots, but Kill Bill looks quite old-fashioned as it is black and white in colour. The Kill Bill opening scene made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy because of the characters heavy breathing and the footsteps coming closer and closer. In The Incerdible Hulk the credits and the actors names come up while the opening scene is playing but Kill Bill had no writing or credits or anything, so i believe that this opening scene doesn't introduce the film properly as it doesn't display any key concepts except the actors on screen.
I will be analysing the opening scene to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The movie starts with two boys, James Logan and Victor Creed. One is healthy and one is ill. Jame's dad is killed by Victor's and in anger, James kills Victor's dad with bone claws. But then it turns out that he was also his dad and the two boys are brothers. The opening credits start when the boys go on the run, with their mutant and healing powers, they fight through The American Civil War, WW1, WW2 and the Vietnam War.
This is a good opening sequence that ticks all the boxes by introducing the settings, the stars of the film (Hugh Jackman and Liev Schriber), the story, the genre, the main characters, makes you aware of the time period. It also sets the up the narrative, the mood and the style. It gets you interested in the film and most importantly tells you the name of the film.
